Illegal late-night swimming was popular in New York City this summer, because everyone loves living in the moment. Fifty-three people were kicked out of 55 city pools this summer—an increase of 9 over last year.
The bulk of the incidents occurred at the Bronx's Edenwald Houses Pool, located inside of the biggest public housing project in the borough. It's there that 30 thrill-seekers were busted 20 different times over the summer. According to park officials, swimmers scaled a 10-foot fence to access the pool. That's determination.
Arthur Pincus, spokesman for the Parks Department, said that tresspassers were ejected but not arrested. “Our job is to enforce rules and educate,” he told the New York Daily News. McCarren Park Pool, located in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood, has been assigned a group of officers to scare rebel swimmers away.
Strangely, the increase in renegade swimmers coincides with a decrease in pool visitors in NYC this summer. Over 1.5 million people visited city pools as of last week, a 13 percent drop compared to last year.
