The spiritual successor to the Homeworldseries put together by former developers of that epic series have made a deal with Gearbox Software renaming the game and making Homeworld: Shipbreakers the next title in the series.

Blackbird Interactive is a game house founded by former founding members of Relic Entertainment, Homeworld's developer. The deal was signed at PAX last week and more than just renaming Shipbreakers, Gearbox will help Blackbird Interactive complete the game and finance production. The RTS world rejoices!

"These guys have been funded by private equity, but it's clear it was going to take many millions of dollars more," Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said. "We're giving them the brand and the resources to make this happen. Now, these guys are cooking and with the money they have now, they can grow the team."

Gearbox purchased the Homeworld series intellectual properties earlier this year as part of THQ's bankruptcy and has plans to release high definition reworks of Homeworld I & II. Homeworld: Shipbreakers the prequel to the series has no release date as of yet, and can't come soon enough.
