Meanwhile, That "Dexter" Spinoff May Still Happen

No. Please. Just stop.

None

With every passing day, it seems that ill-advised Dexter spinoff becomes more and more likely to actually happen. According to The Hollywood ReporterShowtime entertainment president David Nevins revealed at a recent event that the spinoff is still in the works because "Dexter is such a core franchise" to the network: "We're nowhere yet, but I do feel like Dexter is such a core franchise to Showtime...arguably, Dexter is to Showtime what Spider-Man is to Sony or Batman is to Warner Bros., so I think it's going to be important for us to keep it alive."

Ugh. Worst idea ever. Why are spinoffs suddenly the hot new thing—first Breaking Bad, then The Walking Dead, and now this? Dexter literally has nothing going for it at this point, except maybe ridiculous scenes like this one which are only good for GIFing and laughing at. THAT IS NOT ENOUGH TO BUILD A SHOW OFF OF. This just reeks of desperation for more money, on Showtime's part.

The one, tiny silver lining is that actress Jennifer Carpenter did clear up the rumors that the spinoff would focus on Jennifer Carpenter's character Deb, saying basically 'hell no': "I think I have played Deb from start to finish," she commented at the event.

But still—this show does not need to happen. "We spend a lot of time talking about how we keep the show alive, so it may be a more complicated original idea than just a spinoff," Nevins continued, which NO EVEN WORSE. "I hope that whatever we do will feel both original and in keeping with what people expect out of Dexter."

What do we even expect of Dexter anymore? That's the question we should be asking ourselves.
