While many people are afraid of them, bees are, in fact, instrumental to so many aspects of life here on Earth. They are also an incredibly complex life form, whose sole purpose, despite popular belief, is not to give you a painful red welt.

Dewar's Highlander Honey employs the unique skill of communities of bees near their distillery in Aberfeldy, Scotland. In celebration of them, and bees everywhere, here are five fun facts about bees that you most likely didn't know.

1. Only female bees sting
In fact, the stinger, technically known as an "ovipositor," is part of a female bee’s reproductive system. The queen bee uses hers to lay eggs as well as sting. Talk about multi-tasking.

2. There are roughly 20,000 different species of bees in the world
Seriously. Twenty thousand. Think about that next time you're waving one away at a ball game.

3. Bees can't see the color red
This isn't a euphemism for the fact that they can't get mad; bees literally can see every color except red. Bulls also don't get angered the color red, but that's not relevant here.

4. Bumblebees can sting more than once
Honeybees, by and large, can only sting once. This is because, in the process, their stingers get lodged in the skin of their victims, so when they try to pull away, their abdomens get mortally wounded. But bumblebee stingers are much smoother, making for seamless removal when they retreat.

5. The Drone bee's sole purpose in life is to mate with the Queen Bee
Talk about a kept man. Well done, you Lothario, you.
