Nintendo is arguably one of the oldest-school Japanese companies left in the business, consistently refusing to go with popular trends and carving their own path, for better or worse. What’s even more rare than Nintendo following the status quo, though, is the company opening up on their strategies – something Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime did during a recent interview with IGN, acknowledging doubts about the Wii U’s flagging sales.
“Have you heard of the theory or the story of the four-minute mile?" Iwata asked during the interview. "For a very long time in the past, it was believed to be impossible that a human could run a mile in four minutes. However, once one person broke the record, 23 more people broke the record themselves in the following year. Many things we can’t do are simply because we think we can’t do them."
Anecdotes aside, Iwata and Fils-Aime said that the while the Wii U may appear to be in trouble at this point, the company intends to make strides with its latest system by releasing a consistent, solid line-up of games throughout the rest of 2013 and into next year.
Fils-Aime said it’s a platform’s software that will determine it’s value, likening Nintendo’s Wii U plans to the recent string of high profile 3DS titles, which have given the handheld a significant boost in sales. Fils-Aime also pointed out that while the Wii U hasn’t found its Wii Sports yet, it’s a diversity of titles that will keep today’s broader audience interested.
