LinkedIn's days as a repository for resumes and business contacts are numbered, as the site has acquired the company behind the popular social news-reading app Pulse for a reported $90 million.

With 30 million active users, Pulse offers a golden opportunity for LinkedIn to become "a full-fledged information destination unto itself," as The Verge put it. "We believe LinkedIn can be the definitive professional publishing platform — where all professionals come to consume content and where publishers come to share their content," wrote LinkedIn senior vice president Deep Nishar.

For its part, Pulse announced the big news in a blog post saying they'll be rolling out an "influencer" feed on the app, "filled with posts by luminaries like Richard Branson, Jack Welch, and more." The app will remain the same "for now."
