Before Amazon introduces a smartphone, the company is set to debut a set-top box sometime this fall. The device will stream web content right into users' living rooms and compete with the likes of Boxee Cloud DVR, Roku and Apple TV, according to Businessweek.

The set-top box will offer a number of ways to stream Amazon's ever-growing video catalog. Viewers can choose from Video on Demand, featuring newer films and TV shows, and Instant Video, which is free for Amazon Prime subscribers.

Other set-top boxes offer access to Amazon's library, but having its own system could help Amazon expand its already diverse set of digital products. As the company moves to create more tablets and e-readers, along with a smartphone, the so-called Kindle set-top box could bring in a whole new subscriber base.
