On Monday morning, Kansas City Mayor Sly James was in the midst of his “State of the City” speech when he was interrupted by a furious, bearded man. After knocking the Missouri state flag from its holster, the man—later identified as Derron Black—took control of the podium, stealing the spotlight from James and his bow tie.

While angrily pounding his fist on the podium, Black exclaimed "This man has just gotten through talking about exactly what the f*ck he ain’t goddamn did!" He was quickly yoked up by two bodyguards, who he wrestled with before he was taken down. The mayor reportedly continued his speech afterwards.

Yesterday, the 31-year-old Black was charged with third-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and obstructing government operations. He was released after posting bond. A video from a man claiming to be a much calmer Black appeared on Monday, where he apologized for his actions, but continued to challenge James.

Last year, Black ran for a seat representing Missouri House District 23. He wasn't successful. Watch the video of the incident and his apology below.
