Though the film was rejected by both Sundance and SXSW, it looks like The Canyons may have a future yet. The Lindsay Lohan-starrer has reportedly been acquired by IFC, and will have both a theatrical and video-on-demand release, as well as a screening at the Film Society of Lincoln Center this summer.

"On one level, The Canyons is a visually and tonally precise, acid-etched horror story of souls wandering through a hyper-materialistic hell, with a fearless and, I think, stunning performance by Lindsay Lohan at its center," Kent Jones, Director of Programming at the New York Film Festival commented on the project. "On another level, it’s an inspiration and an example to us all: It’s difficult for me to imagine another filmmaker of Paul Schrader’s stature diving into the world of crowd-sourced moviemaking, let alone with such fervor, dedication and rigor." Jones, as well as Schrader, will participate in a conversation about the film after its screening.

We know at least one person at SXSW disagrees, considering the comment one festival insider made after news broke that The Canyons had been rejected: "It’s got an ugliness and a deadness to it." Guess we'll be finding out for sure soon! Until then, all we can do is keep rewatching the first leaked clip from the film and imagine all the probably hilarious possibilities.
