Speaking at TED about Google Glass, Sergey Brin explained some of the thinking behind the two-year project, including why he was driven to create an alternative to everyday smartphones.

"You're standing rubbing this featureless piece of glass," Brin said. "Is this the way we were meant to use our bodies? You want something that will free your eyes." The Google co-founder should know: Even he admitted to repeatedly checking his email and social on his phone "as if it was something really important."

The eyewear won't be available until the end of the year for $1,500, but "it's by no means a done deal yet," he said. Though the project's come far since the days when it was merely a cellphone strapped to a head, it still has a long ways to go.
