If you’re one of the few people out there who went to see Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher in the theaters and hoped to see more installments in the franchise in the future, expect to be disappointed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is likely to never get the planned sequel that Paramount was hoping for because of the soft box office totals both domestic and internationally.

In the U.S., the movie has grossed only $72.6 million, while overseas it has brought in $80.4 million on a $60 million budget. While that may seem like Paramount made a decent profit, you have to remember that marketing costs usually aren’t figured into a studio’s budget reveal, so the actual total amount spent is likely more than that. Plus, it usually takes more than just a few million dollars in profit for a studio to begin thinking about a franchise.

The site is reporting that sources say there is a very slim glimmer of hope for a sequel if the movie does “exceptional” business in Asia when it opens there over the next few weeks. The studio is looking for the movie to double its international gross in Asia alone in order to consider a sequel, which would be a tall order. The good news for Tom Cruise is that he still has hope of reclaiming his A-list status as his sci-fi film, Oblivion, is set to open later this year.
