The Full "Star Trek Into Darkness" Trailer Is Finally Here (Video)

The emphasis is on character over action in this one.

It’s only been a little over a week since the first teaser trailer for Star Trek into Darkness debuted online, but that hasn’t stopped Paramount from unleashing the film’s first full trailer on us in the video above. In this new footage, we get a better sense of the personal struggle of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) as the voiceover details how his hubris and ego will put everyone around him in danger. This is all intercut with quick glimpses of a somber funeral scene, some obligatory romance, and, of course, a few large set pieces, such as The Enterprise crashing into what looks to be Earth.

This trailer also shows us a bit more of Benedict Cumberbatch as the movie’s villain. Not much is known about him at this point, but the brief looks we do get of him here, coupled with some short voice work, makes us believe that he will be a very serious threat, despite being a relatively normal looking character. This choice further proves that sometimes the greatest evil can look like any one of us.

In all, this trailer is still far too vague to give us any indication of how the final film will play out. There is still plenty of mystery about the plot and villain, and it’s possible we won’t get any more answers until opening night. But in an age where trailers have become nothing more than short summaries of a movie, a little secrecy can go a long way.

Star Trek into Darkness comes out on May 17, 2013.
