Superman Soars In This New Trailer For "Man Of Steel" (Video)

An inspiring look at the world's first super hero.

Superman is nothing if not inspiring, and in the big screen reboot of the character, titled Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder is looking to give audiences a version of Supes that they have never seen before. The campy real estate swindles from Superman: The Movie, and the piano-throwing Super Bastard from Superman Returns, are gone and replaced with the grace and dignity that Kal-El’s world deserves.

Also maturing here is the directing style of Snyder, who seems to be taking more of a Watchmen approach to the material, as opposed to the dreadful Sucker Punch. The most noticeable departure in this trailer is how little this resembles a blockbuster. Aside from a few quick flashes of CGI explosions, and a brief glimpse at Michael Shannon as General Zod, there is a natural look to this world that resembles the work of Terrence Malick more than it does a comic book movie.

The influence of producer Christopher Nolan is obvious as Superman and his supporting cast are treated with real world gravitas and respect, instead of just throwing a pair of bright tights on Henry Cavill so he can sell video games and action figures. We would have liked to see more of Cavill and Shannon in their respective roles, but as far as a first full trailer goes, this one makes Man of Steel look like a breath of fresh air.

Man of Steel will hit theaters on June 14, 2013.
