In the wake of the abrupt departure of director Rupert Wyatt from the production of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox has hired Matt Reeves as his replacement. Reeves was on the shortlist of directors that Fox wanted, and he seemed like the obvious choice because of his genre experience and vision.

Reeves is best known for directing Cloverfield and Let Me In in recent years, and this will be his biggest film yet. The absence of Wyatt was devastating after the success of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but it seems like the studio landed a very suitable replacement to bring this franchise into the future.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be released on May 23, 2014.
