30 years after Conan the Barbarian hit theaters and launched the career of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Deadline is reporting that Universal Pictures has just signed a deal to release The Legend of Conan with Schwarzenegger returning as the famous barbarian. The movie will be produced by Fredrik Malmberg and Chris Morgan, with Morgan potentially writing the script if he can finish the screenplay for Fast and Furious 7 by then. The problem is that the studio wants Conan out by the summer of 2014, so there might not be time for Morgan to write it.

“The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior, and this is the take of the film we will make,” Malmberg told the site. “It’s that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows he’ll be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle.”

The movie will ignore the recent Conan remake, as well as the 1984 sequel to the original, which Schwarzenegger also starred in. Schwarzenegger released a quote saying, “I always loved the Conan character and I’m honored to be asked to step into the role once again. I can’t wait to work with Universal and the great team of Fredrik Malmberg and Chris Morgan to develop the next step of this truly epic story.”

Remember, though, Schwarzenegger is 65 right now, so you shouldn’t expect him to have a physique resembling what he had in the original. We’ll have more details on this project as they become available.
