It's not clear how Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes first got together. There are, however, theories on how their romance first started. Apparently, the Church of Scientology had a hand in the matchmaking process by "auditioning" the actress before the two stars began seeing each other.

According to a new report in the October issue of Vanity Fair, months before Cruise got with Holmes in 2005, the Church of Scientology had a hand in the matchmaking process. In 2004, Scientology officials called upon celebrity members of the church to "audition" for a new training film. During the interview process, each actress was asked what they thought about Tom Cruise.

After close surveillance and auditing, the actress who was eventually chosen, Nazanin Boniadi, was then set up on a date with Cruise at popular NYC sushi spot Nobu. The two hit it off and continued a to see each other for awhile, but the initial infatuation rubbed off, and the relationship dissolved just as quickly as it was set up.

Boniadi was heartbroken. Tom, not so much. The actress later revealed the  details of the brief relationship to a close friend, Vanity Fair alleges. Cruise quickly moved on to Holmes, presumably by way of a similar search, and, well, the rest is history.
