In a report that we’re desperately hoping isn’t true, Deadline has broken the news that director Rupert Wyatt might not return for the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Apparently Wyatt is uncomfortable with making the studio’s May 23, 2014 release date for the film and would rather leave the franchise instead of putting out a rushed movie. However, nothing is confirmed as of yet.

2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes was one of the surprise successes of last summer, and it has gained universal praise from both critics and audiences alike. If Wyatt does leave the franchise, Fox will probably be able to attract a high-profile director to take over the project, but it was Wyatt’s ability to handle action, story, and CGI characters that made the original such a hit.

Titled Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, this movie would likely continue the saga of the ape revolution, as well as the downfall of the humans. The script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver is already completed, and the studio is said to be pleased with it. We’ll have more information on this story as it continues to develop.
