Amazon Unveils All-New Kindle Paperwhite eReader With Sharper Display And Backlight

The next generation of a classic.

Showing love to the eReader that started it all, Amazon today announced an all-new version of its traditional Kindle called the Kindle Paperwhite. The new eReader is the first to use so-called "Paperwhite" display tech, which offers greater contrast for "whiter whites and blacker blacks." The display is also higher resolution of 212 ppi or 62 percent more pixels.

Like its competitor, the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight, the new Kindle Paperwhite features proprietary backlighting technology— a first for a Kindle. Amazon says its backlight illuminates the device evenly without draining the battery. The Kindle Paperwhite is said to be able to go eight weeks between charges.

The Kindle Paperwhite is also very thin and light at just 9.1mm thin and 7.5 ounces. It comes in a standard wifi version for $119 and a 3G version (with free data) will retail for $199. Both models ship beginning October 1.

Amazon also announced that last year's Kindle will get a price cut from $79 to $69.
