IBM Opens Research Lab in Kenya

Big Blue bets big on Africa.

None

While corporations are focusing on investing on nations with emerging markets like China, India, and Brazil, IBM is looking elsewhere. Big Blue today announced the opening of a full-scale research center in Nairobi, Kenya.

This isn't IBM's first foray into an African country. According to All Things D, the computer research giant has been involved on the continent for the past twenty years. But due to forecasts the predict the "combined GDP of the sub-Saharan African countries would grow by nearly 6 percent this year," it feels now's the perfect time to set up shop.

Money isn't the only motive, however. IBM feels it can help solve some infrastructure issues that will arise when a large portion of Africa's population shifts to cities within the next 10 to 15 years.
