It seems like director David Cronenberg’s brilliant crime drama, Eastern Promises, doesn’t get nearly the recognition of some of his other films, but that hasn’t stopped it from gaining a cult following since its release in 2007. And for a while, the director was set on making a sequel to the movie with Viggo Mortensen returning to the series. But during a recent interview with The Playlist, Cronenberg confirmed that Eastern Promises 2 is dead.

"We were supposed to start shooting Eastern Promises 2 in October," Cronenberg said. "[But] It's done... If you don't like it talk to James Schamus at Focus. It was his decision."

You can tell from that quote that Cronenberg doesn’t sound too thrilled about the decision to scrap the film, especially since it came from the studio and not from the director himself. And with the proposed shooting schedule set to begin in only a few months, this decision most likely took Cronenberg by surprise.

You can check out Cronenberg’s latest film, Cosmopolis, when it hits theaters this Friday.
