Google's Android is still on top in the war with Apple's iOS over market share, according to a new report by Nielsen. A poll conducted by the researcher shows that a majority of all the smartphones owned in the U.S., 51.8 percent, are currently running some version of Android.

Apple is in a solid second, with its various iterations of the iPhone claiming 34.3 percent of the market. Bringing up the rear is RIM with 9 percent and Windows Phone with 4.3 percent.

With a lead like that, and the capacity to manufacture and sell its own smartphones thanks to its recent acquisition of Motorola, Google is on track to be a leader in this game for the long run. Now if only it could get all those Android phones updated to the same version.
