Canon announced a highly anticipated new camera at an event near Tokyo Japan today called the EOS M. The company's first Mirrorless Interchangeable Lense Camera, the arrival of the EOS M is a big step from the leading camera manufacturer, which had been the last holdout in embracing mirrorless technology.

Like other mirrorless cameras that have been released in recent years by Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Panasonic, Fujifilm and others, the EOS M offers a drastic reduction in size as compared with its DSLR cousins. The compact shooter retains an image sensor much larger than that of point-and-shoots as well as the ability to support multiple advanced lenses. In fact, a big draw for the EOS M is its ability to function with Canon's entire catalogue of lenses via an optional adaptor.

The EOS M features an 18 megapixel APS-C sensor and ISO up to 12,800. Canon is particularly touting the camera's video capabilities, and it shoots full 1080p HD with a 3-inch LCD display for your viewing pleasure.

Alas, the camera is at the high-end of the price range for its class at $799 with a 22mm f/2 kit lens. The EOS M is available for preorder from B&H and Amazon now with a ship date of October 15.
