After it stole the spotlight with the exciting and out-of-character news that it would be manufacturing its own tablet computer last week, rumors quickly began circulating that Microsoft would soon be adding a smartphone to its hardware mix, as well. In a statement to Information Week today, however, the software giant shot down such suggestions.

Asked point blank if Microsoft had any plans to manufacturer its own smartphone, Senior Marketing Manager for Windows Phone Greg Sullivan said bluntly "No, we do not."

Microsoft recently unveiled its latest smartphone operating system Windows Phone 8, which will reportedly appear on phones made by HTC, Samsung, Nokia and others. By promising not to make its own hardware for Windows Phone, the company could be looking to assuage its manufacturing partners, who were caught off guard by the announcement of the all-in-house Surface.
