Genndy Tartakovsky To Direct Animated 3D "Popeye" Movie For Sony

Fans of Samurai Jack should take note of a very interesting tidbit in this article.

Director Genndy Tartakovsky—the man behind Samurai Jack, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Dexter's Laboratory—has been hired by Sony to bring an animated 3D Popeye movie to the big screen, according to Variety. Spider-Man producer Avi Arad will oversee the project, and David Ronn and Jay Scherick are attached to write the script.

Sony is hoping that Popeye will bring along the same success that the studio had with The Smurfs and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in years past. Tartakovsky is the man behind this September's Hotel Tansylvania, which is also at Sony; apparently, the executives liked what they saw there.

But perhaps the biggest news that the site broke in its article is the fact that Tartakovsky is also still planning on directing a feature-length Samurai Jack movie in the near future. The momentum that Tartakovsky will have if Hotel Transylvania and Popeye are successful might be enough to finally get Jack off the ground.
