In the original comics, Bane’s mask was a full-faced lucha libre-inspired design that was meant to conceal his identity and terrify his opponents. But in The Dark Knight Rises, director Christopher Nolan has tweaked the character’s background just a bit to have the mask be more functional, as opposed to just being meant to look cool. In the latest issue of Rolling Stone (via Batman-News), Nolan revealed why his version of Bane (played by Tom Hardy) wears a mask.

For longtime fans of the character, Bane being reliant on an outside substance in order to function is very familiar. When he was originally created, the character had an addiction to venom, a super drug that would greatly enhance a user’s strength, size, speed, and agility. This readjustment of the character is similar in spirit, but different at the same time.
What do you think of these changes? Does the mask make more sense now, or are you still disappointed that you won’t see Bane growing to Barry Bonds proportions thanks to his venom addiction during the movie?
