Bethesda fired off a press release today to announce what's surely the ultimate Doom package: Doom 3 BFG Edition.

Along with Doom 3, the "BFG Edition" will come with the game's expansion, "Resurrection of Evil", as well as seven never-before-played levels dubbed "The Lost Mission". And it comes with the original Doom and Doom 2, just because.

All the Big Fucking Guns from 2004's original Doom 3 are being remastered in HD (with improved rendering and lighting) and optimized for 3D displays, with 5.1 surround sound support as another added bonus. Xbox 360 achievements and PS3 trophies should provide some new replay value, and a new checkpoint system will ease the pain of the original's old school saving.

Bethesda reports that id Software has also "fine-tuned" the controls and added in a new armor-mounted flashlight, "allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time". Considering the original Doom 3 was darker than the bottom of a well, that should be a welcome addition.

Mysteriously, the press release also notes that support for "head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before". We're not really sure what displays they're talking about, but we can't wait to try them out.

So is this the ultimate Doom collection? Are you still hoping for a Doom 4 announcement this year? Tell us in the comments or on Twitter.
