Stepping aside from his countless producer credits, Judd Apatow is going back behind the camera for this spinoff to Knocked Up, titled This is 40. Centering on Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s characters from the original, this movie looks to explore the monotony and uncertainty that goes along with getting older. From trying to reclaim broken dreams, to attempting discover what that strange growth is on your body, this is an honest look at the subject that doesn't depend on cheap humor to get laughs.
Rudd and Mann work seamlessly together and make for an absolutely believable married couple. They share an honest affection towards each other, but also a deep-rooted resentment. These two typify the modern American marriage, and their relationship will undoubtedly be the driving force behind the movie. There will also be supporting roles and cameos from Jason Segal, Melissa McCarthy, Megan Fox, and the brilliant Albert Brooks, which should add the type of laughs that will bring in the masses.
Recent Apatow-produced comedies have often depended on over-the-top jokes to rake in the big bucks, but it seems like This is 40 will be a more down-to-Earth comedy that finds humor in the mundane aspects of everyday life. Rudd and Mann were some of the highlights of Knocked Up, so an entire movie based around their relationship should prove to be simply hilarious.
This is 40 opens on December 21.

It may be a spinoff, but that doesn't make it any less worthwhile.
