There is little doubt that the first G.I. Joe movie was among the worst blockbusters to come out in the past decade, so it’s completely justifiable for you to roll your eyes at the prospect of a sequel. But with some new cast members, a better director, and enhanced special effects, G.I. Joe: Retaliation looks to improve upon absolutely everything that the first one simply couldn’t handle.

In Retaliation, the world of G.I. Joe looks like the over-the-top, high-tech toy chest that made the cartoons so popular to begin with. All of the weapons, vehicles, and costumes look like they jumped right out of the head of a 12-year-old boy after chugging a liter of Coke. Trust us, that’s a good thing.

Simply put, this looks like an unabashed action movie complete with muscle-bound men, beautiful women, and a near-limitless supply of death and destruction. Instead of the CGI battlesuits and terrible performance by Marlon Wayans that was shoved down our throats in the first movie, this one features old school action heroes like Bruce Willis and The Rock adding some legitimacy to the project.

Whatever you do, don’t expect an improved story in this one. Retaliation seems to follow the path of every cartoon-based movie to come out recently by having an unbelievable plot involving the White House and the obligatory destruction of a major city. But as long as the cast and crew give us the over-the-top action and special effects that we crave from a G.I. Joe movie, this might be a solid way to spend $10 during the summer.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation hits theaters on June 29.
