The Huffington Post made history today by becoming the first online-only publication to win a Pulitzer Prize.

Members of the august Pulitzer committee bestowed the honor on the house Arianna built for a 10-part war series the outlet ran last year called "Beyond the Battlefield." The prize went to veteran war correspondent David Wood, who conducted an eight-month investigation into what happens to injured veterans who return home from the battlefield.

"We are delighted and deeply honored by the award, which recognizes both David’s exemplary piece of purposeful journalism and HuffPost’s commitment to original reporting that affects both the national conversation and the lives of real people," Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group said in a statement.

Wood's series won the prize in the National Reporting category. Other awards went to The New York Times, The Philidelphia Inquirer, The Harrisburg Patriot-News, The Tuscaloosa News, and Politico for its editorial cartoons.
