We may have been skeptical about it at first, but Rise of the Planet of the Apes surprised us all by becoming the best blockbuster of 2011 by a pretty wide margin. A daring script, inventive directing by Rupert Wyatt, and groundbreaking visual effects all helped reinvent this fledgling franchise in a way that no one could have imagined.
And once the end credits were over, people everywhere were already clamoring for more Ape action. Now, 20th Century Fox CEO Tom Rothman has spilled the beans on when we could expect the next installment in the franchise in an interview with Collider.
When asked by the website about the release time frame, he responded, "Yeah, I think it would make sense if we can, you know we serve no wine before it’s time, but the goal for us would be summer of 2014, if that’s possible."
He also said that the script is currently being developed and again confirmed that director Rupert Wyatt will be returning as well. It has already been confirmed that Andy Serkis will be back to add more stellar motion-capture acting to the project, so if the studio gives the production team enough time and resources, a Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel could actually outshine its predecessor.
