It's only a matter of time before a traditional sunglasses manufacturer offers up a competing product to Google’s looming Project Glass. After all, in the near future, why would consumers settle for regular shades when they can get a pair with a smartphone built-in?
Oakley is the first to confirm that they’re actively working on a prototype, even revealing that they first began to look into similar technology more than a decade ago. “As an organization, we’ve been chasing this beast since 1997,” Oakley CEO Colin Baden told Bloomberg. “Ultimately, everything happens through your eyes, and the closer we can bring it to your eyes, the quicker the consumer is going to adopt the platform.”
When it comes to high-tech glasses, Oakley has been on the cutting edge for some time—its Thump model was one of the first to sport a built-in mp3 player back in the mid-2000s. Many Ramirez famously endorsed them—during play.
