Nintendo responded to the increasing amount of chatter speculating that the Wii U won't be able to process graphics at the same level at the PS3 and Xbox 360. Without confirming or denying speculation, a Nintendo of America representative told Yahoo's Digital Trends blog that the console's visual capabilities weren't the designers' primary concern:

"We do not focus on technology specs. We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers.”

A report from Gamesindustry International earlier this week featured reports from multiple developers who've worked with the upcoming console, saying that it could not produce graphics on par with Sony and Microsoft's current machines.

As of now, the majority of the Wii U's confirmed titles are multi-platform titles that either have been or will be released on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, including Ninja Gaiden 3Batman: Arkham City and Assassin's Creed III.

"No, it's not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360," said one designer. "The graphics are just not as powerful."

A second developer from a different studio had similar thoughts: "Yeah, that's true. It doesn't produce graphics as well as the PS3 or the 360," they said. "There aren't as many shaders, it's not as capable. Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can't quite keep up."

On the other hand, both Gearbox and Vigil Games have supported the Wii U's graphical fidelity, saying that the Wii U version of their upcoming games - Aliens: Colonial Marines and Darksiders 2 - will both look as good or better than their PS3, Xbox 360, and PC counterparts.

Technically, Nintendo still has not commented on the technical capabilities of the Wii U. The company has said that they plan to announce the final specs and launch details for the Wii U at or around E3. The Wii U is expect to launch by the end of 2012.
