Valve Says Don't Hold Your Breath for a Steam Console

Never say never, but it looks Valve isn't making the jump to consoles just yet.

None

It appears that all of last week's excitement over the possibility of a Steam-based console by Valve was all hot air.

Valve representative Doug Lombardi told Kotaku that the schematics unearthed by The Verge were not for a so-called "Steam-Box", but for a device used to test Steam's new Big Picture Mode, a new interface for gamers who use their TVs to play PC games.

"We're prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we're building boxes to test that on," said Lombardi. "We're also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we've talked about a fair amount."

That said, they never actually said that Valve wasn't working on any sort of game console, only that the device in question wasn't it and that we shouldn't expect to see anything in the near future.

"All of that is stuff that we're working on, but it's a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware."

Sad that Valve's not getting into the console game? Do you Valve is working on a console and just keeping it under wraps? Start conspiracy-theorizing in the comments!
