New Line Cinema has hired two new writers to work on the big screen adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic Y: The Last Man, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia are now in final negotiations to pen the script to the film, which has been stuck in development hell for years now.

Federman and Scaia are accomplished TV writers, having worked series such as the DC adaptation Human Target and the cult-hit, Jericho. This is the duo's second movie project in the past year after they were hired to work on Sony's untitled Zorro reboot.

A movie version of Y: The Last Man has been on the horizon for quite some time now, but the project never seems to get going. The most recent rumors involved Shia LaBeouf starring in the movie with D.J. Caruso attached to direct; however, the site is reporting that those plans have since been scrapped.

Y: The Last Man will be based off the DC/Vertigo comic of the same name that was created by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra in 2002. It centers on a young escape artist named Yorick Brown who is the last survivor of a mysterious plague that killed-off every male mammal on Earth. Armed with his pet monkey, Ampersand, Yorick travels the globe looking for answers behind the catastrophe.
