There is no getting around the fact that 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was a let-down in almost every way. Based off the popular toy line, cartoon, and comic, the movie failed to live up to the broad appeal that Michael Bay'sTransformers films brought to the big screen, and it just wound up looking amateurish in comparison. Now, Paramount is trying to save the franchise by injecting it with testosterone-fueled action and mayhem in G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Bruce Willis and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson join the cast for this sequel and they are bringing their years of action experience with them. The Rock's action-figure physique and Willis' grizzled demeanor are exactly what this movie needs after the original one failed to truly capture any of the characters' larger-than-life personalities. Channing Tatum is still here, but thankfully it looks like he is taking a backseat to these two blockbuster veterans.
Already, this movie looks more visually appealing than its predecessor by featuring improved CGI and getting rid of the atrocious robotic battle suits from the original. Director Jon Chu seems to recognize what didn't work from The Rise of Cobra and is looking to improve it for Retaliation.
We'll see if everything comes together when G.I. Joe: Retaliation hits theaters on June 29.
