Double Fine Raised $400,000 For Their Next Adventure Game In Only 8 Hours

Holy crap.

None

Tim Schafer's Double Fine Productions has decided to do away with publishers for their next point-and-click adventure game, instead crowdsourcing funds via Kickstarter—a historical move for a major studio. Their goal of $400,000 was easily surpassed in just over eight hours, proving definitively the viability of this approach.

Backers will get unprecedented access to the team and the game throughout its development, including an exclusive documentary series produced by 2 Player Productions, discussions and polls regarding actual design and content decisions, and beta access (once it reaches that stage). Double Fine wrote that they're "committed to total transparency with this project, ensuring it is one of the most honest depictions of game development ever conceived."

This whole thing is really quite astounding. Reward tiers for backers include everything from posters to personal portraits by the game's artist, and even bowling with Tim Schafer and the team—head to Double Fine's site for info on the rewards that were too high for them to post on Kickstarter.

Are you surprised by how quickly they reached their goal? Did you help them along? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter.
