What is a progeny without its maker? We can't say for sure, but we are about to find out, as True Blood's creator and show runner Alan Ball is posed to step down from his duties.

HBO has confirmed that Ball will be stepping down as show runner if the show reaches it's sixth season (it is going into its fifth this summer). If the show reaches that point, as it is expected to do, Ball's involvement would be limited to a supervisory position. HBO assures us that the show, as we've come to know it, will go on: “If we proceed to season six, the show will remain in the very capable hands of the talented team of writers and producers who have been with the show for a number of years.”

Ball, who currently holds an executive producing role for his upcoming Cinemax series Banshee, is relinquishing his old duties for new ones, but says he will always look on his foray into the supernatural with great fondness, "True Blood has been, and will continue to be, a highlight of not only my career but my life."
