Canon's New Cameras Will Focus On Your Friends, Ignore Strangers

How's that for face detection?

None

Here's an interesting factoid about Canon's recently announced ELPH series cameras and G1 X: they've got a new face detection feature that will automatically pick out your friends' faces in a crowd.

The new system, called Face ID, allows you to store up to 12 of your friends' faces in the camera's on-board memory. Whenever the camera sees that you're shooting one of those people, it will automagically put their face in focus, thereby avoiding the common scenario where some random stranger becomes the unintended focus of your photo.

Canon says the G1 X and the ELPH 110 HS will be available in February, with the ELPH 520 HS arriving in March. Expect the tech to spread to other cameras shortly thereafter.
