Even though Google's Chrome browser is currently matching and besting Mozilla's Firefox in terms of marketshare, Google still wants to make sure its search engine gets top billing in the popular browser. Earlier this week the two agreed to make that happen. But the two companies declined to mention one little thing: Google will pay Mozilla close to $300 million each year to remain the default search engine in Firefox.
The three-year deal will net Mozilla close to $1 billion. According to reports, Google decided to pay the large sum to fend of competing offers from Microsoft, which is looking to vastly expand the marketshare of its Bing search engine. In 2010, Google paid Mozilla $123 million for the top search spot.
