"G.I. Joe" Sequel Renamed, Takes "Star Trek 2" Release Date

It seems like the Trekkies lost is the Joe's gain.

Paramount Pictures has shifted director Jon Chu's G.I. Joe action sequel into the summer slot once set aside for the next Star Trek film. Now titled G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the picture will now move up from its previous date of August 10, 2012 to July 29 to fill in for J.J. Abrams' film.

The pressure is really on Chu to churn out a blockbuster hit, which may be easy to do with Channing Tatum, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and the sexy Elodie Yung as its stars. Joseph Mazzello (The Pacific, Jurassic Park) joined the cast a few days ago to play the role of 18-year-old Southern charmer Mouse.

With the clock ticking on Jon Chu's latest film that he'll now have to deliver in just over a year, can the Step Up 3 director defy the odds? We're still a little sketchy on the plot, but as we get closer to an actual filming date, that's sure to come to light.
