If you’ve been to college, anytime in the past 15 years, you’ve probably been in a dorm room that either a) had the soundtrack to this film blasting on some crappy speakers or b) had the poster for this film pasted to the wall. Based on the stunning novel of the same name by Scottish author Irvine Welsh, this 1996 film focuses on a group of severely dysfunctional characters in Edinburgh.

Heroin, robberies, beatings, lots of pints, hallucinations, thick accents—these are only part of the film that put both director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) and actor Ewan McGregor on the map. While the novel followed a much darker path, the film manages to find some humor in the squalid living conditions and often horrific situations that these misfits embroil themselves in. Welsh penned a sequel, entitled Porno, that envisions the characters 10 years later, and rumor has it that Boyle has just been waiting for the original cast to age sufficiently.—Finn Cohen
