The Social Network's Armie Hammer has replaced Ryan Gosling as the frontrunner to star opposite Johnny Depp in Disney'sThe Lone Ranger.
Planned as both an origin story and an inversion of the old hero paradigm that defined previous incarnations, director Gore Verbinski (the first three Pirates Of The Caribbean movies) is hoping to do a Don Quixote-style take on the cowboy action-adventure flick, with the tale told from Tonto' (à la Sancho Panza) point of view. With Hammer's "all-American boy" look, he'd be an interesting foil for Depp's Tonto.
Up next for Hammer is a high-profile co-starring role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar.
