Durham, N.C.’s Retrofantasma film series presents this freaky double feature about disturbing psychic powers. First up is Brian DePalma’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek in her now-famous role involving a teenage girl’s revenge on her mom and her prom. Both Spacek and Piper Laurie, who plays Carrie's mom, were nominated for Oscars.
Patrick, an Australian film with some not-so-subtle references to Hitchcock's Psycho, tells the tale of a young man (the title character) in a coma induced by his doctors after he murders his mother and her lover. His telekinesis allows him to write messages to a nurse via a typewriter, and with his mind he defends himself against the doctors who want to kill him. He also never closes his eyes — the actor, Richard Thompson, was given special eyedrops that helped him keep his eyes open for long periods of time.
