In a now-deleted Instagram post, 50 Cent likened Jay Z's 4:44 to "golf course music," saying, "I thought the shit was aight. I liked the shit, but I'm gonna keep it 100: the shit was too smart. I felt like I was supposed to be wearing glasses and tie a fucking sweater around my waist. It was like Ivy League shit."
During 21 Savage's recent appearance on Everyday Struggle, the concept of the "generation gap" in the world of music (hip-hop specifically) came up, and with 21 being a big part of what the kids are rocking to in 2017, it made sense to get his take on the comment, especially with 50 saying his next album won't be "as smart" as 4:44, because kids don't want to "overthink" music.
"The Jay Z album," 21 explained, "I don't feel like Jay Z's really doing it for one particular crowd. I feel like he's just doing him. He don't really need to put out music, so at this point, if he's putting something out, it's for his love of hip-hop, so I can't really say he put it out for kids, I think he just put it out to send a message."
When it's mentioned that 50 doesn't think there's a space for what Jay's doing right now, 21 lets it be known that "it's a space for it, because he just did two-something in the first week." 21 went further, letting people know that he wouldn't be staying in one particular lane with his material.
"I'm an artist, so I'm gonna create and grow," 21 said. "I'm not just going to stick to one thing 'cause I think that's what they want, because as I'm growing, my fans are getting older, too."
Akademiks also asked 21 Savage about Jay Z's money phone diss on "The Story of O.J.," to which 21 let Ak know that he isn't flexing on the 'gram, but also broke down how much he, at 24, understood what Hov was getting at. "Jay Z been rich for a long time, so this is what he's trying to do: He's trying to tell us the mistakes he made so we don't make them."
21 continued, "Jay Z not wrong; he's saying 'invest in real estate.' He's saying smart shit, it's just, some niggas not ready for that, and some niggas are." 21 said he listened to it, and he's trying to get some (more) real estate.
