The members of the Wu-Tang Clan sat down with Montreality to answer some questions about a few big topics. Foremost among them: mumble rap.
RZA had a whole lot to say on the subject, including pointing out that "mumble rap" was a moniker imposed by the press.
"First of all, what is mumble rap, who made that title?" he asked. "I bet you the guys who’s doing it, they didn’t call it mumble rap. That’s what the media calls it. Let them make their music and have fun and do their thing."
While saying he comes "from the era of dope lyrics," RZA was adamant that he and the Clan "don't discriminate" against modern-day artists. However, he closed by warning against the evils of lean.
"Anybody who’s out there who’s sipping on that syrup, and that’s making you mumble, leave that syrup alone, man,” he pleaded.
The group members sounded off on a few other topics as well. They shared which current NYC emcees they're feeling (Young M.A., Dave East, Joey Badass, the ASAP Mob, and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie made the cut); and also talked about their memories of Mobb Deep's Prodigy, who died just over a week ago.
U-God remembered playing playing paintball with P while on tour, while Raekwon recalled recording their classic collaboration "Eye for a Eye (Your Beef Is Mines)." RZA pointed out that Prodigy found his artistic voice while still young.
"Havoc and Prodigy both were advanced beyond their years," he said. "Some emcees don't get good until they're 25, but at 19 the kid was already nice."
