Interview: Producer G. Ry on Partynextdoor's 'Colours 2' and How Drake Impacted Its Release

Producer G. Ry talks about his work on Partynextdoor's 'Colours 2' and what he has in store for the future.

Last week, Partynextdoor surprised everyone with the release of the Colours 2 EP, a four-song project that offers an intimate view into his life and the women who have inspired his latest work. As OMO member and Colours 2 co-executive producer G. Ry tells it, he and Party put this together a while back but we're waiting for the right time to share it with the world.

On Monday night, Party shared an updated version of Colours 2 on SoundCloud with an intro that not only includes Majid Jordan, but also G. Ry's brother Roland, who is currently incarcerated.

That's G.Ry brother on the intro btw he's currently serving time., Blessings Free Roland.

G. Ry spoke with Complex about the making of the EP, how a major placement on Drake's More Life impacted its release, and what he and Party have planned for this year.

It sounds like you guys found a groove creating this over the course of five days. Where did the inspiration come from?
It was definitely trying to hit the fans over the head with a fresh sound, our organic chemistry, and just really being spot-on with our sound. Trying to really make the best shit we can within those five days.

Was there anything specifically you worked on that made you think, “I need to share this with the world.”
It’s a natural PND sound. And just about how he’s dealing with being a young artist, a young man, and all these relationships that he’s gone through, and is currently going through. A lot gets portrayed about him in the media. So it’s great to touch on that on the record.

He’s a pretty private artist. You really only get to him through wax.
Yeah. It’s definitely about the women in his life.

one of the songs ended up going on More Life so we kind of left the idea alone.

Back in December you referenced PNDColours and teased another short project was coming from Party. Was this the one you were talking about?
The second installment for the PNDColours series Colours 2 is what I was referring to earlier in the year. I thought it would come out around that time, that's why I made the anniversary post in December but one of the songs ended up going on [Drake's] More Life so we kind of left the idea alone for a while after, even though it was being hyped a lot on social media after making the Instagram post.

These EPs are important to us because it's the canvas for me and Party to showcase our talents differently than what the fans are used to hearing and to the style of music people are hearing from other artist's at the time. For example, the different sounding voices or effects like he did on "Just Know" on PNDColours, or the new flow over a slower BPM that he does on "Freak in You" on this new one. As a producer it was my job for these songs all to sound differently but bring them in a space together to live sonically at the end.

I'm really proud of this project because of the fact when I saw Drake in Las Vegas for the Billboard Music Awards, the first thing he told me was, "Yo, that new EP you and Party did is so good."

Do you have any plans to release more collaborative projects, whether with Party or someone else? I know you work with Omarion.
Yes, I’m on Omarion’s album. I got other songs with other artists. But I have plans with Party; he has other projects coming out like his album. And then I got new artists that I’m working with like K. Forest, he’s dope as well. As a producer you always want to keep your palette versatile even if it’s the same genre.

You said Party is working on the new album, and obviously he’s going on the Halsey tour. Are you guys planning on working through that or does he usual take breaks when he’s on tour?
Me, personally, I don’t like going on tour because it’s kind of a lot, especially if you’re not the artist. And I can’t work on the road like on buses or hotel rooms. So I usually let him go on tour and stay back and work. But when he gets back we’ll get back to working on it. That’s in about four months so it’s hard to call where we’ll be at.
