Watch 'Hot,' the New Complex Original Documentary on Bobby Shmurda

We take an inside look at Shmurda, investigating the circumstances that led to the 22-year-old rapper’s 2014 arrest.

In the summer of 2014, you couldn’t walk down the street in New York without hearing the synth stabs of a familiar Jahlil Beats production. The beat, originally performed over by Lloyd Banks as "Jackpot" was being repurposed by an emerging Brooklyn-based MC named Bobby Shmurda. With a catchier hook, a grimmer vibe, and the help of a viral vine of the Shmoney Dance, the track, now dubbed “Hot N*gga,” propelled the then 18-year-old rapper into an overnight phenomenon.

But just as Shmurda’s star was on the rise, his past caught up with him and he was locked up for 7 years for conspiracy to commit murder, weapons possession and reckless endangerment related to his GS9 crew. But how did he get there? We take a look back at the life of Shmurda, investigating the circumstances that led to the 22-year-old’s arrest, and talk with Al Sharpton, rap detective Derrick Parker, and Complex News anchor Nadeska Alexis about what the future holds for the young rapper.
