According to data obtained by the Wall St. Journal, there were 600 murders in Chicago through November of 2016. That number was a 45 percent increase from 2015’s total, and the highest total in over a decade. With the murder rate reaching shockingly high levels, President Donald Trump provided Twitter commentary on the matter during the first few days of his administration.

If Chicago doesn't fix the horrible "carnage" going on, 228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24% from 2016), I will send in the Feds!

“If Chicago doesn’t fix the horrible "carnage" going on, 228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24% from 2016), I will send in the Feds!” Trump tweeted on Jan. 24.

While fellow Chicagoan Kanye West met with Trump in late 2016 to discuss issues related to his native city, Twista offered a different perspective on Trump’s plan to curb Chicago’s gun violence.

“We need afterschool programs, money put back into the community and stuff like that, so we can help ourselves,” Twista said, in a video posted to TMZ. “Not the National Guard coming in. You see what happens every time you have a martial law type of thing and you bring that type of mentality to the neighborhoods. It’s a bad experience every time. Nobody would agree that that’s a good idea. I’m pretty sure none of the families in Chicago want to walk outside of their doors and see that type of thing.”

President Trump has yet to provide additional details about how the presence of federal troops in Chicago would be implemented. The Associated Press reported a 12-year-old girl was one of six people shot in Chicago two days after President Trump weighed in on what he referred to as the city’s “carnage.” The shooting occurred at a memorial service.
