Demi Lovato probably shouldn't feel so confident about a copyright lawsuit that was just filed against her.
The pop star is being sued by indie band Sleigh Bells for copyright infringement due to the similarities between her 2015 song "Stars" and their 2010 track "Infinity Guitars." According to Hollywood Reporter, Sleigh Bells filed a complaint in California federal court on Monday, alleging that "Stars" sampled "Infinity Guitars" without permission.
"A comparison of the two songs reveals that, at the very least, the combination of the hand claps and bass drum, structured as 3 quarter beats and a rest, with the bass drum providing a counter-rhythm to the hand claps, is at least substantially similar in both works," the complaint reads. "This infringing material repeats throughout the Defendants’ song."
The band originally called Lovato out for borrowing from their song back in November 2015, shortly after her song was released.
However, a rep for Lovato denied that "Stars" used any material from "Infinity Guitars" a short time later. "We did not use any samples in Demi Lovato's song 'Stars.' Demi was also not involved with the production. She only wrote topline," her rep told Billboard at the time.
"Infinity Guitars" was the second single from Sleigh Bells' critically acclaimed debut album Treats and later appeared in a Samsung commercial. As Hollywood Reporter points out, this could lower the burden of proof on Sleigh Bells' side since the song has a "high degree of access" to the public.
