Lil Yachty is known for not caring about old-school or serious hip-hop. In a new interview with Billboard, Yachty says he "honestly couldn't name five songs" by Tupac or The Notorious B.I.G. He dismisses the criticisms of this, saying, "if I'm doing this my way and making all this money, why should I do it how everybody says it's supposed to be done?"

Yachty has always been known for his unorthodox opinions about the rap game. In an interview with Tidal recently, he called all serious hip-hop boring. “It’s just fun, it’s not serious. I hate serious rap. It’s boring. Serious rap music puts me to sleep.” He also claimed in an interview with 106 KMEL that while he likes J. Cole, Yachty never listens to his music.

This casual attitude towards major pillars of hip-hop has rubbed some old-heads the wrong way, but has also been a major part of his popularity with young people. “I just can’t wait until the point when everyone understands hip-hop isn’t the same anymore,” Lil Yachty said during his recent appearance on The Breakfast Club. He went on to say that people “just don’t like me because I’m not lyrical enough... If you ever read comments and click on their profile, they’re like super old.”

Clearly, Yachty is going to keep doing him, regardless of whether old-school fans of hip-hop are down for it or not. You can check out his whole interview here. Yachty is also going to be appearing on the Pigeons & Planes stage at ComplexCon.
